![]() ![]() Springtime in a world rife with death and destruction. Persephone to my Hades, as some used to call me. Moral licensing I didn’t think twice about until the lines bled too fully for me to distinguish between them. If you’re not a reader of the genre, this book may not be suitable for you. ![]() ![]() It is NOT fantasy or a literal retelling. *Promises and Pomegranates is a full-length, standalone, dark contemporary romance inspired by the Hades and Persephone myth. There are plenty of books to read if you loved Bridgerton and need something to hold you over. We may have to wait a while for season 2 of the show to appear on the streaming platform (they won't even begin filming until summer 2021), but you don't necessarily have to wait that long to get your over-the-top regency romance drama fix. If you're reading this, that means you're one of the many millions of people who have watched (and maybe even rewatched) Netflix's wildly successful drama Bridgerton, and you're already looking for more. ![]() ![]() ![]() He brought boys from the Other Place to join in the fun, but Peter’s idea of fun is sharper than a pirate’s sword. Peter brought me to his island because there were no rules and no grownups to make us mind. There is one version of my story that everyone knows. That secret is a butterfly that lives in a jar, a butterfly that was supposed to be gone forever, a butterfly that used to be called the Jabberwock. ![]() But someone knows her secret-someone who has a secret of his own. In the New City lives a girl with a secret: Elizabeth can do magic. ![]() But the verdant fields are nothing but ash- and hope is nowhere to be found. A place where Alice could finally rest, no longer the plaything of the Rabbit, the pawn of Cheshire, or the prey of the Jabberwocky. The land outside of the Old City was supposed to be green, lush, and hopeful. Just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood… She doesn’t remember why she’s in such a terrible place. Her hair, once blond, hangs in tangles down her back. In a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people called the Old City, there stands a hospital with cinderblock walls which echo the screams of the poor souls inside. ![]() ![]() ![]() But since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least he can do is help her out of her jam. There’s a reason Knox doesn’t do complications or high-maintenance women, especially not the romantic ones. Now she’s stuck in town with no car, no job, no plan, and no home with an 11-year-old going on thirty to take care of. After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves her with something unexpected. ![]() ![]() Too bad for Naomi her evil twin hasn’t changed at all. She was riding to the rescue of her estranged twin to Knockemout, Virginia, a rough-around-the-edges town where disputes are settled the old-fashioned way…with fists and beer. Naomi wasn’t just running away from her wedding. Knox doesn’t tolerate drama, even when it comes in the form of a stranded runaway bride. Unless you count his basset hound, Waylon. Bearded, bad-boy barber Knox prefers to live his life the way he takes his coffee: Alone. ![]() ![]() ![]() It read like an in depth study into human nature. ![]() There were plenty of really funny moments as the alien attempts to understand why we do the things we do and I really enjoyed this unusual concept, however the main focus of this story is what it means to be human. This book was completely different to what I expected. What follows is a set of awkward encounters as the alien attempts to navigate life on Earth. Our narrator is an alien sent to planet Earth to erase any mention of a mathematic equation that will far advance the human race. I’ve heard amazing things about The Humans so picked it up as soon as I saw it in a local bookshop. I read How To Stop Time by Matt Haig and absolutely loved it. Who is he really? And what could make someone change their mind about the human race. Everyone, that is, except Newton, and he’s a dog. He feels lost amongst a crazy alien species and hates everyone on the planet. ![]() Even his loving wife and teenage son are repulsive to him. ![]() SynopsisĪfter an ‘incident’ one wet Friday night where Professor Andrew Martin is found walking naked through the streets of Cambridge, he is not feeling quite himself. Source: I picked a copy of this up from a second hand bookshop. ![]() ![]() There was little world building and hardly any time to give the characters’ back story or motivation. I highly recommand this book ! Say au revoir to vampires and ghosts, Superheroes, here they come !įun, campy, everything you'd expect from a superhero tale.īut ‘Untouchable’ was a little too short. This book touched my heart and I loved all of it ! I laughed and smiled a lot while reading. Now, Untouchable being a first publication, I need to point out the flawless writing. I can't wait to read more about them and the other characters ! Ethan and Greyson's love story was perfectly brought and nice to read. (Though I would have loved more !) I also enjoyed the romance between two superheroes. The plot was simple but catchy, compelling, and very well developed. It's funny, sweat and exciting ! I loved the main character, Ethan, quickly because he was genuine, endearing and authentic. Untouchable is a short read that all the book lovers, who look for something different and amazing to read, will enjoy. This is the first story I read about superheroes and so I was excited to read something new to me. It would have been a shame to miss this goodread. I'm sooo happy I had the chance to read Untouchable before its release. I liked the cover and the blurb so I asked if I could have an ARC. Because I have a soft spot for first publications and YA stories, I was happy to help. This book came to me a bit by chance, thanks to the author who asked me if I wanted to help him for the realease of his first book. (From my blog) ARC given in exchange of an honest review. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s hard for much of the book to determine exactly what the overreaching story is. ![]() Being a self-confessed railway geek, that’s what drew me to these books. A 200-meter wide strip of land that’s declared independence. It’s a railway line that crosses Europe from Lisbon to Chukotka, Siberia. There’s even a sovereign state that’s thousands of miles long. Fragmented into numerous states and polities. It hasn’t just broken up, it’s shattered. America is reclusive, Xian Flu has decimated the world’s population, and the European Union has broken up. (This is a slightly odd comment as Le Carré’s son, Nick Harkaway, does write science fiction and the ones I’ve read are nothing like Europe in Autumn).Īs the novel opens we find ourselves in near future Europe, post some unspecified but heavy-duty geopolitical upheavals. If the books of John Le Carré and China Miéville had children, this is how they might turn out. Blessed are the libraries for they bring us great books.Īnd Dave Hutchinson’s Fractured Europe sequence is great indeed. ![]() ![]() Clarke nominee Nod by Adrian Barnes, sitting at the front of my local library were copies of 2015 nominee Europe in Autumnand its sequel Europe at Midnight.I’d heard great things about these books, but hadn’t gotten around to picking them up. By coincidence, whilst I was reading 2013 Arthur C. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sedaris has a way of taking something very mundane and day-to-day and transforming it into a larger metaphor, and doing it in a humorous manner. ![]() This long essay is more a journal of his experiences of trying to quit smoking, although it becomes more of a retelling of his experiences while briefly living in Japan. When You Are Engulfed in Flames takes its title from the final – and longest – essay in this collection, “The Smoking Section.” The title refers to something the author reads while in Japan – a bad translation of English, or “ Engrish” as it is sometimes called. He is the kind of writer whom I aspire to be who makes you laugh but also makes you think, and while you’re thinking, you say to yourself, or maybe you say out loud, “oh, I see what you did there, Mr. He is a humorist, but a higher caliber humorist, someone who’s well-read and well-traveled and, well, … smarter than you. When you read David Sedaris, words like “wry” and “witty” and “highbrow” go through your mind. ![]() |
